The Immie-Lara Walk

The Immie-Lara Walk is held in support of the Childhood Cancer Association (CCA), with a goal to raise $5,000 to help families like ours who have experienced the loss of a child to cancer. Since beginning in 2023, the walk has proudly raised over $35,000, and we would love for you to join us again this year.

The Childhood Cancer Association receives no government funding, and having personally experienced the incredible support they provide, we are committed to ensuring other families can continue to access their vital services.

About the Walk
Following the Aldgate Valley Nature Trail, you will walk 12km from Mylor Oval to Aldgate Primary School and return, with an option to complete a shorter 8km return trip from the 4km mark. View the route here: Aldgate Valley Nature Walk (Valley of the Bandicoots) | Hike

Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children.

Add a touch of pink or purple to your outfit to show your support!

After the walk, enjoy a treat from our cake stall or visit Verté Kitchen across the road – $1 from every coffee sold on the day will be donated to the walk.

Following on from last year’s success, we are excited to add a new twist to this year’s event – a raffle on the day! There will be plenty of fantastic prizes up for grabs, so don’t forget to purchase your tickets at the registration table when you sign in. Cash and EFTPOS payments will be available. The raffle will be drawn after the walk.
Tickets: $5 each or 3 for $10

If you can’t join us in person, you can still make a difference by donating or sharing our fundraising page. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible, and a receipt will be issued at the time of donation.

Thank you
Karen Blenkinsop (Immie’s Mum) and Pam Paris (Lara’s Mum)

Lara
Lara was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in May 2014 at the age of 10. The next 19 months were spent in treatment, with unexpected challenges along the way. After six months of treatment a rare ALL clone was discovered which took us to The Sydney Children’s Hospital for a bone marrow transplant. We were there for three months.

Unfortunately, the Leukaemia continued with limited options available. At this time a new therapy called CAR-T Cell Therapy was being trialled in America. Due to its success a branch of the trial was opened at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Lara was the first paediatric patient in Australia involved in this therapy. However, we did not complete the therapy. Our dear Lara passed away on Boxing Day 2015 at the age of 12.

Her bravery, resilience, positive determination, and beautiful personality will always be with us, loved and remembered.
Immie
Imogen (Immie) was a bright, mischievous and dearly loved 6-year-old when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2013. She had surgery to remove the tumour, then 6 weeks of radiation, and chemo for 7 months. Through that whole ordeal, she became renowned as the child with a really high pain threshold, who never complained, and always had a ready smile.

She went into remission after that treatment until a regular MRI scan in September 2015 showed a tumour growing in the rear of her brain again.

She had another operation in March 2016 to remove that tumour, and was back at school about 4 weeks later. In March 2018 another MRI scan showed 3 new tumours growing. At that time we were told she may only have 6 months left with us.

We lived with the knowledge that she was now incurable, and that her time with us was limited – but she kept going, showing no symptoms in spite of the tumours continuing to grow, until around August 2019, when she started to have some seizures, and balance issues.

Immie passed away at home on June 14, 2020 at the age of 13.

That is okay! We will have a check point located approximately 4km into the walk. You can use this point as your halfway point and turn around. Alternatively, you could choose to take two cars as there is parking at Aldgate Primary School, off Fairview Road.

Will there be access to toilets?

add remove

There will be public toilets located at the start of the walk and one portable toilet located at the halfway (6km) point, at Aldgate Primary School. There will be no toilets between the starting point and the halfway point.
