Thomas' story
When Thomas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, life changed instantly for his family. In those first overwhelming days, the Childhood Cancer Association stepped in – offering kindness, essential items and a sense of support that the family desperately needed. “Childhood Cancer Association has been by our side since our diagnosis and we are eternally grateful for the support they have shown us,” Thomas' mum, Morgan, shared.
Just three days after diagnosis, Thomas' family were introduced to the Childhood Cancer Association team and received a care bag filled with everything from toiletries to Thomas’ very own Elliot dog. Since then, the family has accessed many areas of support: Financial assistance, counselling, school-holiday sibling programs enjoyed by Thomas’ two sisters, personalised letters to and from Elliot, the annual Christmas Party, and time away from it all at (respite accommodation) Bradley’s Place. “We have utilised so many services, and each one has made this journey a little lighter,” Morgan said.
Gratitude
Thomas' family's gratitude for the support they received sparked a desire to give back. Pledge 450 was a natural and meaningful fit for them to bake 450 treats to raise funds to support the work of the Childhood Cancer Association.
“Since Tom’s diagnosis, we’ve spent a lot of time baking. It was a slow, simple activity he could enjoy during treatment," his mum shared. They often brought their creations to the Michael Rice Centre for Haemotology and Oncology team at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a small gesture of thanks. “It became our way of showing gratitude to the amazing medical staff caring for Tom," Morgan said.
Why Pledge 450 is critical for families like Thomas'
As for why others should join Pledge 450, Morgan’s message is clear: “The Childhood Cancer Association plays an integral role when a child is diagnosed with cancer. By taking part, you’re not only raising awareness but helping ensure Childhood Cancer Association can continue providing every service that families like ours rely on.”
